PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium which permits recording and reproducing at a high recording density and has high S/N and small modulation by forming an underlying layer of a composite underlying layer consisting of at least two layers. CONSTITUTION:The underlying layers 6, 6' on the substrate 1 side of the composite underlying layer are constituted of at least one kind of elements selected from Zr, Si, Ti, Y, Sc, Al, C, Ge, Sb, and Cu or alloys essentially consisting of at least one kind of said elements or at least one kind of oxides selected from aluminum oxide, silicon oxide, and magnesium oxide. The underlying layers 7, 7' on the magnetic layer 3, 3' side of the composite underlying layer are constituted of at least one kind of elements elected from Cr, Mo, W, Ru, Os, Pd, V, Nb, Hf, Rh, Pt, and Ir or the alloys essentially consisting of at least one kind of said elements. The magnetic recording medium which has the extremely small modulation, the high S/N, the high performance suitable for high-density recording and high reliability is thereby obtd. |
