A highway sign, preferably a large directional sign or board, has a circular frame 6 to which the outer edges of a sign surface 2 are fastened, for example, by pop rivets, and possibly with support and assembly elements arranged between the frame 6, to which the sign surface 2 may also be attached, and suitable suspension elements, and furthermore the frame 6 and possibly the support and assembly elements have the same cross sectional shape, Figure 2, with a smooth closed front side 4, to which the sign surface 2 is attached. The cross section of the common base profile 8 is essentially rectangular with a closed rectangle 12, whose opposite long sides 14 have extensions 16 beyond a short side 18 of the rectangle 12, which extensions at a distance from the short side 18 have edge pieces 20 inwardly projecting toward each other, which form between themselves a lengthwise opening 22 toward the short side 18, since the edge pieces 20 form inner wedge-shaped recesses 24 with the extensions 16. Thus, the highway sign can be constructed from a minimum of system elements, in that the frame profile or base profile 8 can be used both as frame element 6 and supporting and/or assembly element.
