PURPOSE:To secure a speed ratio variable speed optimum to the driving state of a vehicle in a proper manner, by controlling a pressure regulating valve so as to accord the desired variable speed of a transmission determined in relation to the driving state of the vehicle with the actual speed ratio variation one detected. CONSTITUTION:A belt type continuously variable transmission 14 has plural turning shafts 16 and 18, plural variable pulleys 20 and 22 being attached to each turning shaft and variable in each effective diameter, a transmission belt 24 being rolled on each variable pulley and transmitting the power and plural hydraulic cylinders 26 and 28 altering each effective diameter of these variable pulleys. In this case, each detection signal out of respective speed sensors 90 and 92 installed in each turning shaft and each detection signal out of both sensor 96 and 98 for detecting a driving state of an engine 10 are outputted to a controller 94. And, it controls each of pressure regulating valves 48 and 58, regulating working hydraulic pressure to be fed to each hydraulic cylinder, so as to cause the desired variabled speed of a speed ratio in the transmission to accord with the actual speed ratio variable one.
