The invention relates to a method for providing flexible textile articles, especially bed linen, towels and the like, with codings, especially with bar codes representing multi-digit numbers and/or letters, the elements of the code and/or bar code being formed by a contrast thread introduced into the fabric of the textile article. The contrast thread is pressure-resistant and heat-resistant, is flexible and detectable electrooptically or magnetically and can be sewn, woven or drawn into the fabric of the textile article. The coding of the textile article thus has a contrast which is always constant. The sewing-in, weaving-in or other introduction of the contrast threads into the fabric of the textile article can take place under program control.
