PURPOSE:To precisely identify different areas by generating a high-pass emphasis signal and a low-pass signal from a density image, scanning them in a prescribed window, searching the difference of a maximum value and that of a minimum value, and comparing them with prescribed thresholds. CONSTITUTION:An area identification device 10 generates the high-pass emphasis signal and the low-pass signal from the input density image, executes scanning in the prescribed window, and searches the differences of the maximum values and the minimum values of respective signals. With comparing the differences, it decides the areas. On the other hand, an image forming device 20 sets the density image to branch into the image areas of a character, a photograph and a mesh point, compares them with prescribed thresholds at respective areas of three kinds and generates binary image data. A selection circuit 30 selects binary image data in accordance with an identification signal from the device 10 and supplies it to an output device so as to record it. Thus, the different areas of the character, the photograph and the mesh point can be identified simultaneously and precisely.
