PURPOSE:To prevent a developer on a developing sleeve from moving onto a latent image carrier by starting driving and rotating the developing sleeve before a developer layer contacts the surface of the latent image carrier and carrying on the rotary driving of the developing sleeve even after the layer leaves the surface. CONSTITUTION:When a developing device 14 moves to a development position, the developing sleeve 15 begins to be driven and rotated before the developer layer on the developing sleeve 15 contacts the surface of the latent image carrier (rotary drum) 1. Then when the developer 14 leaves a development position, the rotary driving of the developing device 15 is carried on even after the developer layer on the developing sleeve 15 of the developing device 14 leaves the surface of the latent image carrier 1. Consequently, the developer on the developing sleeve 15 is never peeled off to move to the side of the latent image carrier, and problems such as a deficiency of a developer, the formation of a pitch irregularity sleeve ghost, the back staining of an image, etc., are eliminated effectively.
