PURPOSE:To decrease the KANA (Japanese syllabary)/KANJI (Chinese character) conversion errors and to improve the conversion efficiency by designating the symbols excluding KANA characters as the punctuation symbols via a document producer so that a character string of the proper length is obtained in a KANA/KANJI conversion. CONSTITUTION:A CPU 21 reads a control program cut of a program memory 22 and brought into action and the characters and symbols inputted via a character/symbol key 13 are stored in a working memory 23. While a dictionary memory 24 stores the candidate character strings containing KANJI. The symbols contained in an unfixed character string are selected by the key 13 and a designation key 15. Thus the CPU 21 stores these selected symbols as the conversion punctuation symbols. Then a conversion key 16 is pushed so that a character string including the head character through the punctuation symbol is converted into a candidate character string of the memory 24. Thus the conversion is carried out with punctuations of the proper length set by a document producer. In such a way, the conversion errors are decreased and at the same time the conversion efficiency is improved.
