PURPOSE:To prevent the oxidation decarburization of the surface of a steel product to be treated when the members of the steel product are heat treated in an atmospheric furnace, by putting the members in a packing bag made of steel foil, replacing the air in the bag with an inert gas or the like, sealing the bag and heating the members. CONSTITUTION:When the precision-worked members of a steel product are heat treated in an atmosphere furnace, the members are put in a packing bag made of steel foil of 10-100mum thickness, the air in the bag is replaced with an inert gas or a slightly active gas and the bag is sealed. The members in the sealed bag are heated in the atmospheric furnace. The oxidation of the surface of the steel product by oxygen in the air and the decarburization of the surface causing increased scale loss and surface roughness by the oxidation can be prevented at a low cost.
