PURPOSE:To display matters that demand special attention related to lighting/ extinction of a light source for transmission illumination on a liquid crystal display panel even at the time of extinguishing this light source by using a semitransparent display panel as the display panel. CONSTITUTION:This device consists of a semitransparent liquid crystal display panel 1, a cold cathode discharge tube 2 as the light source for transmission illumination on the rear face of the panel 1, a light source driving circuit 3 using a high frequency inverter, and a control circuit 4 which instructs lighting/ extinction. That is, a display device is incorporated in the device, and the light source 2 for transmission illumination is not lit in an initial state where the power source of the incorporating device is turned on. Since the liquid crystal display panel 1 is semitransparent in this case, the display quality is slightly degraded but the display can be read. At this time, the control circuit 4 waits for the use start request of the display device. When a preliminarily determined key switch on the operation board of the incorporating device is depressed, the control circuit 4 detects the use start request and sends a lighting instruction signal 5 to instruct the light source driving circuit 3 to light the light source.
