PURPOSE:To economically obtain a compound useful as a synthetic intermediate of ACE inhibiting agent in one process and high yield, by reacting (S)-a-(p- toluenesulphonyloxy)propionic acid with (S)-homophenylalanine ether ester. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by the formula (X is halogen or sulfonyloxy; * is asymmetric carbon) or salt thereof is reacted with (S)- homophenylalanine ethyl ester at 0-120 deg.C for 10min-30hr to provide the aimed compound expressed by the formula. Two raw materials can be both used in equimolar-excess amount and non-solvent or solvent, etc., such as chloroform is used as a solvent and as necessary the reaction is carried out using a base. The above-mentioned compound is useful as a common synthetic intermediate of various kinds of amino acids useful as an antihypertensive agent by angiotensin-converting enzyme-(ACE)-inhibiting activity.
