1286617 Variable capacitors INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 17 Dec 1970 [31 Dec 1969] 59927/70 Heading HIM A fluid, e.g. water, cooled vacuum variable capacitor comprises an envelope constituted by cylindrical ceramic or glass body 1, metal cylinders 2, 3, closure plates 4 and 48, ceramic or glass body 10, end plate 28, bellows sections 8 and 9, and inner end closure 44 for the bellows, the envelope containing the fixed electrode 5 and movable electrode 6, the latter being mounted on base-plate 7 and actuated by hollow shaft 14, cooling fluid being introduced within shaft 14 from entry 19, passing through radial passages 22 to the space between the shaft and bellows, thence to chamber 32 and exit 31, a seal comprising members 34, 35, 36 preventing leakage of cooling fluid while allowing axial movement of shaft 14 relative to the exterior end of the bellows. A bearing body 11 supported from end plate 28 is in sliding contact with shaft 14 at places 2, 6 and 27 and end cap 18 is fixed to shaft 14 and prevented from rotating by screw 40. Passages 47 permit cooling fluid to enter the space between body 11 and shaft 14 to improve lubrication. The bellows parts 8 and 9 are joined by welding to annular disc 12 with passages for cooling fluid, disc 12 being secured to sleeve 13 which just clears shaft 14 and prevents snaking of the bellows. The seal comprises two P.T.F.E. chevron seals 34, 35 (Fig. 2) each having an expander ring 61 in a circumferential groove. Spacer 36 separates the seals and provides a leakage space communicating with radial passage 43.
