PURPOSE:To fully utilize a limited memory area, by overriding an inputted print data having a space in the character code through a pitch information modifying means thereby preventing storage of excessive print data which requires no printing into a memory means. CONSTITUTION:CPU 18 annuls an inputted print data having a space code, and adds a pitch information to be associated with the space code into a correction memory 28 so as to carry out compression of data. If a pitch information corresponding to a previously stored character code has been added already, print data is not annulled and the print data corresponding to the space is stored as it is in the correction memory 28. Furthermore, a position register 29 for storing a corresponding print data stored at a head position is provided, and when the print data is shifted out, corresponding pitch information is added into the position register 29 so as to update the information. Consequently, memory area in a memory means can be utilized effectively resulting in an effective storage of print data.
