PURPOSE:To expand a knocking decision area by initiating a fail-safe function for a fault of a knocking sensor or the disconnection of the signal cable or connector of the knocking sensor in response to a rise in the temperature of an engine caused in case of knocking generation. CONSTITUTION:When the knocking sensor 1 detects engine vibrations, the vibrations are classified by a knocking gate 2 and a noise gate 3. The output of the noise gate 3 is supplied as a threshold value to a comparator 10 through a low-pass filter 8 and an amplifier 9. The comparator 10 compares this threshold value with the output of the knocking gate 2 to decide knocking. The temperature of the engine is detected by a temperature sensor 21 and when the temperature is high, the output of the comparator 11 is applied to an AND circuit 14 through an inverter 12 to mask the output of the comparator 10.
