PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer suitable for soil modifiers, etc., by surface treatment, in the presence of water, of a specific highly water-absorptive polymer with specific hydroxybenzophenone compound to markedly improve the light stability on water absorption without impairing its water absorptivity. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer can be obtained by surface treatment of a highly water-absorptive polymer containing carboxyl and/or carboxylate group(s) [e.g., acrylic acid (salt) polymer] with 0.01-10wt.% of hydroxybenzophenone compound(s) of formula I and/or formula II [X1 and X2 are each functional group reactive with the functional group in said polymer (e.g., glycidoxy group)] (e.g., 2-hydroxy-4-glycidoxybenzophenone) in the presence of 5-100wt.%, based on said polymer, of water.
