PURPOSE:To obtain a recording picture with high resolution while keeping the gradation by providing an arithmetic means applying the expanding processing to an input picture element data to the pre-stage of a screen processing section and applying the screen processing by the submatrix method to the picture data subjected to the enlargement processing. CONSTITUTION:After the enlargement processing increasing the data number of a picture element data is applied by an arithmetic means 26 in an enlargement pre-processing section 12, the screen processing using the submatrix method is applied by a screen generating section 13 by means of a memory means 32, readout control means 30, 31 and a comparison means 33. In using the submatrix method, the gradation of an output picture element is kept and the output picture is reduced depending on the submatrix size. Thus, the resolution of the picture obtained through the constitution above is improved by several times while the picture size and the gradation are kept constant in comparison with those of the picture by the conventional density pattern method.
