To detoxify industrial waste waters (effluents) contaminated by pollutants, in particular hydrazine, sulphide, ammonia, formic acid and/or organic materials and also those waste waters having a high oxygen demand, an oxidising agent is used which comprises hydrogen peroxide which contains traces of at least one heavy metal salt as a catalyst, a catalyst concentration being selected at a molar ratio below 30:1.
