<p>An apparatus for determining the charge of aqueous suspensions of finely divided solid charge particles useful in regulating the flocculation of such particles which includes a cross-shaped tubular member with longitudinal and crossmember elements, a piston receiving member with a longitudinal axis coincidental with the longitudinal axis of the longitudinal element, a casing surrounding the piston receiving member, a first electrode adjacent the bottom end of the piston receiving member, and a second electrode above the first electrode. A reciprocating element in the bore of the piston receiving member causes fluid to flow in a repetitive manner across the electrodes, generating signals which are conducted to an amplifier and subsequently to a means for using the amplified signals. Means for conducting the electrical signals from the electrodes is synchronized with the action of the reciprocating element by an optical isolator, and there is an ultrasonic cleaning device for preventing agglomeration of charged particles contained by the liquid in the area around the electrodes.</p> |
