NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by the formula (X is Cl or Br; R is H or lower alkyl). EXAMPLE:(E,Z)-[[3-( 2-Chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy )-alpha-bromomethylbenzyli dene]amino]oxy]acetic acid. USE:An intermediate for herbicide. PREPARATION:3-(2-Chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)acetophenone is reacted with the formula H2N-O-CH2-COOR to afford (E,Z)-[[[3-(2-chloro-4- trifluoromethylphenoxy)-alpha-methylbenzylidene]amino]oxy]acetic acid derivative, which is then halogenated to provide the compound expressed by formula I. When the compound expressed by formula I is used, a compound useful as a raw material for producing herbicide expressed by formula II is nearly quantitatively obtained.
