Novel optically active 3,4-bis-(diphenylphosphino) pyrrolidines having the formula wherein Ph represents a phenyl radical and R represents hydrogen, an alkyl radical, an arylalkyl radical, or an acyl radical, and rhodium complexes containing them as chiral ligands as well as their use as catalysts for the homogeneous asymmetric hydrogenation of unsubstituted or .beta.-substituted .alpha.-acylamino-acrylic acids are described.
