PURPOSE:To smoothen outline parts of a character outputted through exposure, by decoding the same compressed character pattern data, two times by different systems, and performing exposure outputting of the relevant character two times according to the results of decoding. CONSTITUTION:First, a disk controller 3 reads compressed character pattern data from a disk 2 in response to a command from a CPU 1, and stores the data into a memory 5. Next, a decoder 4 decodes the compressed data thus stored, by a first decoding system in which a calculated Y-coordinate is rounded to the nearest whole number, thereby calculating the coordinates of picture elements displayed on a CRT 6, Dots are outputted to predetermined positions of a photosensitive material 8 through the CRT under the control of a controlling part 9. Thereafter, the compressed data stored is decoded by a second decoding system in which each value of X is converted into X'=X-0.5 while all values of Y are rounded up, and outputting to the material 8 is conducted similarly to the above, thereby performing exposure two times. As a result, a density difference is generated between the dots for which exposure is conducted two times and the dots for which exposure is conducted one time, whereby the outline of the exposed character is smoothened, and printing quality is enhanced.
