[Also in Division C5] Novel compounds of formula R-N-(R 1 )- R 2 -SO 3 M, where R and R 1 are each C 1-20 alkyl groups providing at least one of R and R 1 contains at least 8 carbon atoms, R 2 is C 1-6 alkylene and M is lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium or ammonium, are prepared by reacting an alkyl halide of formula R-Hal with a salt of formula H-N-(R 1 )-R 2 -SO 3 M, wherein R, R 1 , R 2 and M are as above and Hal is a halogen radical, at a temperature of from 80‹ to 180‹ C. for from 2 to 8 hours. A molar excess of a salt to alkyl halide may be employed and they may be reacted in a diluent, e.g. water or an organic solvent. |
