A laminate is produced by interposing a film of a thermoplastic resin between a thermosetting resin-impregnated sheet and a metal plate or foil wherein a peroxide or a mixture of a peroxide with either an organic acid or an anhydride of an organic acid is present and heating the assembly under pressure to melt the surface of the thermoplastic resin film and decompose the peroxide thus intergrating the laminate components. Specified thermoplastic films are polyethylene, polypropylene, copolymers containing an olefinic group, polyvinylchloride or a mixture of at least two thermoplastic polymers. Several peroxides are specified, benzoyl peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and t-butyl perbenzoate being used in the examples. A matt laminate may be produced by the above method including the additional step of putting a second film of thermoplastic resin on the outside of the thermosetting resin-impregnated sheet and peeling off the second film after the heat and pressure treatment. Specified metals are aluminium and steel and the sheet impregnated with thermosetting resin may be paper or a non-woven cloth of acrylic fibres.</p> |
