An apparatus for monitoring the soiling of gas filters, in particular air filters, operates with a light beam emitter, preferably an infrared emitter, and an associated detector in an aligned orientation on either side of the filter material through which the gas flows. Emitter and detector are incorporated into an electronic circuit which further includes means for indicating the degree of soiling of the filter material. The monitor apparatus is used in all filter devices which are accessible to the monitoring for soiling or plugging, such as industrial filters, engine air filters, fresh air filters for ventilating motor vehicles, in air conditioning units etc.
