PURPOSE:To make use of conversion code suitable for magnetic recording without shortening a recording wavelength by equalizing a bit clock for readout of a new word in a serial state with the previous bit clock before conversion. CONSTITUTION:With such a digital signal recorder for recording data as converted from n-bits per one word of eight-nine conversion codes, etc., into m-bits (m>n), a track length by a magnetic head is lengthened. Namely, that is to increase a tape wrapping angle and to read out the data converted into m-bits per one word by lengthening the time by m/n by using a buffer memory. In other word, the track length recordable by a magnetic head can be lengthened by m/n by increasing the tape wrapping angle approximately by m/n. On the other hand, the data of n-bits per one word is converted by a read-only memory into the data of m-bits per one word and then followed by the buffer memory to prolong the time by m/n. Therefore, there is no reduction on the recording wavelength using n-m conversion.
