NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by the formula (R is glycosyl; m is a positive integer which may optionally vary; n is an integer of 1-3; Z is CHO, CH2OH or COOH). EXAMPLE:beta-D-Galactopyranosylpolyethylene glycol aldehyde. USE:A reagent for introducing chemical modifying groups into physiologically active proteins. PREPARATION:For example, polyethylene glycol mono-2-tetrahydropyranyl ether is acetylated and then reacted with oxalyl chloride to provide, 2,3,4,6-tetra- O-acetyl-beta-D-galactopyranosylpolyethylene glycol aldehyde. A solution of sodium hydroxide in methanol is then added to remove acetyl group and afford the aimed compound expressed by the formula.
