PURPOSE:To selectively separate the titled compound from a raw material oil containing a dimethylnaphthalene isomeric mixture, by using Y-type zeolite prepared by ion exchange of cation sites with specific cations as an adsorbent and a 7-10C aromatic hydrocarbon as a desorbing agent. CONSTITUTION:2,6-Dimethylnaphthalene is adsorbed and separated from a raw material oil containing a dimethylnaphthalene isomeric mixture. In the process, Y-type zeolite in which cation sites thereof are subjected to ion exchange with one or more cations selected from zinc, iron, cobalt and nickel is used as an adsorbent and a 7-10C aromatic hydrocarbon, preferably one or more compounds selected from toluene, o-, m- or p-xylene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene, 4-ethyltoluene and tetralin are used as a desorbing agent to efficiently and selectively separate the aimed compound from the afore- mentioned raw material oil.
