1282738 Ether-alcohols HENKEL & CIE GmbH 1 Oct 1969 [2 Oct 1968] 48132/69 Heading C2C Ether- and polyether-alcohols are prepared by reacting a compound having at least one alcoholic hydroxyl group with an alkylene oxide in the presence of stable carbonium ions (defined) as catalyst. The carbonium ions, e.g. tropylium, are preferably mesomeric stabilized and derived from diphenylmethyl, triphenylmethyl or cycloheptatrienyl. Preferred alcoholic starting materials are mono- and poly-hydric alcohols of the aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and alkylaromatic series containing 1 to 24 carbon atoms, e.g. tetradecanols, octanols, butanols and oleyl alcohol.
