PURPOSE:To obtain the strength for standing high load without lowering of frictional characteristic and wear characteristic by providing a sliding surface made of copper or iron series sintered friction material, the outer peripheral portion of which does not contain low melting point metal, and setting the density of the outer peripheral portion and the internal portion at 5.5-6.0g/cm<2> and 4.2-5.2g/cm<2> respectively. CONSTITUTION:A friction material 10 as a disc brake pad comprises an outer peripheral portion 12 and an internal portion 14. The material for the friction material 10 is formed by sintering mixed powder of Sn, ZrO2, Pb, graphite and copper, and the outer peripheral portion 12 does not contain low-melting point metal. The density of the outer peripheral portion 12 is 5.5-6.0g/cm<2>, and the density of the internal portion 14 is 4.2-5.2g/cm<2>. Thus the rigidity of the outer peripheral portion 12 is high so that in case of high load, it is hard to generate cracks at that portion, and cubical expansion is not caused. Accordingly the strength for standing high load can be attained without lowering of frictional characteristic and wear characteristic.
