PURPOSE:To detect the skew and lateral deviation of leaf etc., by performing specific arithmetic processing based upon the edge generation order, time difference, etc., of the outputs of detecting elements arranged so that one edge part of the leaf, etc., passes. CONSTITUTION:The detecting elements P1-Pn are arrayed at equal intervals at right angles to the lengthwise direction of a conveyance path 3 (3a, 3b) along a line 4a extending crossing the position where the reference edge part 2 of the leaf 1 passes. The elements P1-Pn output signals which rise when the front end of the leaf 1 passes and falls when the rear end passes. An arithmetic part which has a microphone detects the direction and value of the skew of the leaf by using the generation order, time difference, etc., of the edges of the output signals. Further, the position of the center part 2m of the edge part 2 in the breadthwise direction of the conveyance path 3 is detected from the breadthwise position of the conveyance path 3 when the front end 5 of the reference edge part 2 passes the array of the detecting elements and the length (supplied previously to the arithmetic part) of the reference edge part 2. The deviation of this position from an original expected position is detected as lateral deviation.
