PURPOSE:To make the active time of an air-fuel ratio sensor accurately judgeable even at the time of atmospheric pressure being lowered, by compensating a judging value (setting value) of an air-fuel ratio sensor output signal, showing that the air-fuel ratio sensor is in an active state, according to a detected result of the atmospheric pressure. CONSTITUTION:In this controller, there is provided with a judging means M3 which judges whether an output signal of an air-fuel ratio sensor M3, generating a signal proportionate to residual oxygen content in exhaust gas is abnormal in the setting value or not after the elapse of the specified time since a fuel cut has started, besides during this fuel cut. And, setting the judged result at this judging means M3 down to one of starting conditions, execution of air-fuel ratio feedback control is started by an air-fuel ratio feedback control means M4. In the air-fuel ratio controller like this, also there is provided with an atmospheric pressure detecting means M5 for detection of atmospheric pressure. And, the said setting value at the time of judging an active state of the air-fuel ratio sensor M2 according to the detected atmospheric pressure is constituted so as to be compensated by a setting value compensating means M6.
