A process for converting alcohols to carboxylic acids which process comprises contacting in the vapour phase one or more alcohols, water and added hydrogen at a temperature ranging from 200 DEG C to 500 DEG C with a catalyst comprising catalytically effective amounts of copper, zinc, chromium and a promoter selected from the group consisting of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, rare earth metals and mixtures thereof supported on a porous refractory support.
