PURPOSE:To readily produce carbonaceous microspheres suited for use as a raw material of an adsorbent, a catalyst, etc. with high productivity in high yield and at low cost, by mixing a petroleum or coal pitch with a particular arom. compd. and heat treating the mixture. CONSTITUTION:Petroleum or coal pitch is mixed with a compd. of the formula (wherein phi1-phi3 are each an arom. unit; X is -CH2, -O-, -NH-, -S- or -SO2-; and n is 0-20) or with a mixture of these compds. Examples of the compd. of the formula include gamma(p'-methylbenzyl)diphenylmethane and p,p'-di(p- methylbenzyl)benzene. The compd. of the formula is appropriately used in an amt. of about 0.5-100 times that of the pitch. The obtd. mixture is heat treated in which the mixture is heated at about 200-500 deg.C for a predetermined period of time in an inert atmosphere while stirring. Thereafter, cooling and filtration are performed to prepare carbonaceous microspheres. |
