NEW MATERIAL:4-Hydroxy-2-oxo-1-pyrrolidineacetonitrile shown by formula IV. USE:A drug. A cerebral metabolic improver itself or a raw material for oxiracetam (=4-hydroxy-2-oxo-1-pyrrolidineacetamide) as a cerebral metabolic improver. PREPARATION:A 3,4-epoxybutyric acid alkyl ester shown by formula I (R is alkyl ) or a 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyric acid alkyl ester shown by formula II (X is halogen) is reacted with glycinonitrile shown by formula III preferably in a solvent optionally in the presence of a base such as NaHCO3, etc., at 60-150 deg.C to give a compound shown by formula IV.
