NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R is 1-18C alkyl; *is optically active atom). EXAMPLE:(R)-(-)-p-2-Chloropropoxycarbonylphenyl 4'-heptyloxybiphenyl-4''-carbo xylate. USE:A liquid crystal display element exhibiting ferroelectricity, having excellent chemical stability, capable of extending a temperature range of chiral smectic C phase and useful in extension of operating temperature range of the display element. PREPARATION:(R)-(-)-2-Chloropropyl p-hydroxybenzoate expressed by formula II is reacted with 4-heptyloxybiphenyl-4'-carbonylchloride expressed by formula III in the presence of pyridine, etc., in a solvent such as benzene, etc., at room temperature to provide a compound expressed by formula I.
