In a trip recorder which can be fitted into an instrument panel of a motor vehicle provided with an upper tray and in which a tachograph chart carrier is moved out upwards from the trip recorder housing, the upper tray of the instrument panel has a corresponding opening for the free passage of the tachograph chart carrier moved upwards, which opening can be closed by a dust cover actuated by the movement of the tachograph chart carrier. A lock which is accessible from the front side of the instrument panel and interacts with a key serves for triggering the movement of the tachograph chart carrier.
