A drive for lifts has an electric motor (12) for driving a worm (30), which drives a worm wheel (20, 28) mounted on a shaft (22) at right angles to the worm (30). The drive shaft (22) lies in a horizontal plane and carries a lift rope sheave attached to it. The opposite ends of the shaft (22) are borne in two bearings (32, 36) in a one-piece gearbox (14). The drive is assembled by inserting the worm wheel (20, 28) through the side of the gearbox (14) into the latter, and then introducing the shaft (22) via one end of the gearbox, through the worm wheel (20, 28) and into the bearing (36). Next, a thrust washer (40) is drawn up against the end of the shaft (22), to hold the shaft tight against the inner bearing race, and also to push the worm wheel (20, 28) onto the shaft (22). After that, the worm (30) is inserted from the top of the gearbox (14). The bearing holes for the two bearings (32, 36) are formed on a common axis. <IMAGE>
