PURPOSE:To improve the safety in the activation of a hydrogen storage alloy and to reduce the number of production stages by electrochemically carrying out the occlusion and discharge of hydrogen while agitating the granular or powdery alloy for reversibly occluding and discharging hydrogen. CONSTITUTION:The electrochemical occlusion and discharge of hydrogen are carried out more than once while intermittently or continuously agitating the granular or powdery alloy for reversibly occluding and discharging hydrogen to activate the hydrogen storage alloy. The contact area with the alloy powder and the infiltration speed of hydrogen increase, as the surface area of the electrode increases. Besides, the hydrogen occluding speed is related to the equilibrium pressure of hydrogen, hence an electrolyte is cooled to reduce the equilibrium pressure of hydrogen when hydrogen is occluded, the electrolyte is heated to increase the equilibrium pressure of hydrogen when hydrogen is discharged, and hydrogen can be more efficiently occluded and discharged. |
