PURPOSE:To correct shading even in case of read of a thick original by detecting the state of an original pressing means to switch contents of the reading processing of a reference density pattern. CONSTITUTION:An image sensor 18 reads the picture on an original scanned with carrying rolls 2. When an upper cover 3 is depressed, a reference density pattern 16 faces the reading surface of the sensor 18, and a book carrier 50 where a thick original 90 is stored faces it. When the cover 3 is depressed, a switch SW 3 is closed and a main control unit 100 causes a unit 200 to perform the processing of the read picture. The unit 200 corrects the output level of the sensor 18 at the time of reading the original 90 in accordance with the output level of the sensor 18 at the time of reading the pattern 16 and switches contents of the picture signal processing in accordance with turning-on/off of the SW 3.
