PURPOSE:To obtain an optical pulse which has a narrow width approximately equal to the response speed, by using the quick response of an optical bistable element, especially, shortness of the fall time of reflected light. CONSTITUTION:An optical pulse (or optical step) having a short rise time is made incident on optical bistable elements 1, 2, and 4 having a short fall time and the reflected light is taken out as an output pulse. That is, when the optical pulse (including the optical step) is made incident on optical bistable elements 1, 2, and 4, the reflected light is quickly increased in accordance with the rise of the optical pulse until it exceeds a threshold, and the transmitted light is quickly increased but the reflected light is quickly reduced after it exceeds the threshold. Thus, the reflected light is taken out as the output pulse to obtain a very short pulse width resulting from addition of only the short rise time of the optical pulse and the short fall time of optical bistable elements 1, 2, and 4. |
