PURPOSE:To accurately measure strain by forming a hollow shaft as part of a propulsion shaft, inserting a mandrel into its core part, and providing a strain measuring instrument between the free end of the mandrel and the hollow part of the hollow shaft. CONSTITUTION:The mandrel 9 is inserted into the core part in the hollow shaft 8. The hollow shaft 8 which is the propulsion shaft is twisted, the mandrel 9 and hollow shaft 8 are displaced relatively in a peripheral direction. Namely, one end of the mandrel 9 is fixed, but the other end is a rotatable and slidable free end, so when the torsional force operates on the hollow shaft 8, the end of the hollow shaft 8 and the free end of the mandrel 9 are displaced relatively in the peripheral direction and the gap size between a lever 12 and a displacement gauge 13 is measured by the displacement gauge 13 as the torsional strain, so that the torque is found.
