PURPOSE:To contrive a reduction in labor for forming a ruled report and contrive higher versatility, by calculating the printing positions for items and rules from information such as data attribute, item length and heads of items required by the user, and designating the pattern number of a desired one of rule forms stored as patterns. CONSTITUTION:A report request analyzing part forms an item printing information management table having information such as data attribute, item length and heads of items for the items which the user wants to output. When a request for a ruled report is made, a rule inserting position calculating means determines the column positions for printing the items and rules on the basis of the table, in consideration of the sizes of one-byte characters and two-byte characters. Required rule element characters are selected by a rule form generating means by referencing a rule element character management table 8 based on a form pattern number, and rule patterns are formed by decomposing the components of a report into a page header part, an intermediate part of age and a lower part of page. By this system it is possible to determine the last line based on the insertion of rules between summation printing lines or the number of pieces of input data, and it is possible to form a variable ruled report.
