PURPOSE:To improve information describing efficiency and to realize a noncontact reading action by showing each position of the identification information on an individual in the form of the size of the area of an object having the variable density different from a background and the contents of information in the form of the number of small objects having the same variable density as the background within said object. CONSTITUTION:A camera 2 fetches a code printed matter 1 as a picture and a picture recognizing device 3 consists of an LSI which binarizes the picture of the code fetched by the camera 2. Each position of the identification information on an individual is shown in the size of the area of an object having the variable density different from a background. Then the information contents are shown in the form of the number of small objects having the same variable density as the background within said object. The areas and number of these object are obtained just by counting the number of connected same picture elements. While the objects showing each position of the identification information have their areas of the same order and it is possible to discriminate whether the variable density is inverted or not by checking the variance of variable density within an object.
