PURPOSE:To eliminate errors in a shift quantity and to improve the accuracy of stopping a roll by locking on an output signal of a clatter length detector for the roll and correcting a shift control system. CONSTITUTION:The output signal of a roll shift direction detector 21 is + and is locked on in a lock on processing circuit 22 to add the signal So inputted to the circuit 22 to a command value SW of the roll shift in order to correct the clatter length while the roll shift direction is in an arrow + direction when SW is given. The value of the output signal G of a clatter removing detector 7 attains the value at the max. shift position to shift the roll when the roll is shifted in the arrow + direction of the roll shift direction. The lock on in the circuit 22 is not needed to shift the roll further in the arrow + direction of the roll shift direction when the shift is stopped.
