A linear drive with a reversible electric motor which is suitable, in particular, for valves, comprises a spindle which is driven by this motor, if required via a reduction gear mechanism, and can be turned in a fixed nut. The spindle causes axial displacement of a feeler which is sprung relative to it. The spindle is furthermore connected, via a second mechanism to the shaft of a position indicator, in particular a measuring potentiometer. The end positions of the spindle and, where appropriate, also intermediate positions are indicated by position switches or these switches are actuated in the corresponding positions. The operating cams, like the measuring potentiometer, are adjusted by the rotation of the spindle.
