PURPOSE:To efficiently produce a high-molecular weight polycyanoaryl ether, by polycondensing a dihalogenobenzonitrile with a compound having two phenolic hydroxyl groups in the presence of an alkalimethal hydrogencarbonate. CONSTITUTION:(A) One mol compound having two phenolic hydroxyl groups, e.g. resorcin, 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl, etc., is blended with (B) 0.98-1.03mol halogenobenzonitrile, e.g. 2,4-dichlorobenzonitrile, etc., and (C) 2-2.5mol alkalimetal hydrogencarbonate, preferably LiHCO3, NaHCO3 or KHCO3 and a solvent, preferably N-methylpyrrolidone, etc., is added to keep the concentration of the compound (A) at 0.2-2mol/l. Reaction is then carried out at 150-250 deg.C polymerization temperature, preferably under ordinary pressure or somewhat higher pressure while stirring for 0.3-6hr.
