PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium which obviates a decrease in output during use under the conditions of low humidity by disposing a thin ferromagnetic metallic film on a hygroscopic layer disposed on a polyester film. CONSTITUTION:The thin ferromagnetic metallic film 6 is disposed on the hygroscopic layer 5 disposed on the polyester film 4. The lubricating effect generated by the moisture evaporating from the hygroscopic layer 5 while the humidity is low suppresses the adhesion of metals to each other. The shape of the tape in which the film 6 is held deformed outward to a projecting shape by the hygroscopic expansion is changed toward a flat direction and, therefore, the contact state with a magnetic head is improved and the adhesion of the metals to each other is relieved. The film changes to the projecting shape under high humidity and consequently, the contact area with a post, etc. is decreased and running resistance is lowered. The medium is thus less susceptible to damages. The magnetic recording medium which obviates the decrease in the output and decreases the change of S/N is thus obtd. even if the alloy head is used alternately in the environment of the low humidity and high humidity.
