PURPOSE:To obtain a monoazo lake pigment which has a high tinting powder and is clear and suitable for use as a pigment for printing inks and paints, by substituting a specified compd. for part of a coupler in producing a monoazo lake pigment. CONSTITUTION:In a monoazo lake pigment obtd. by coupling a diazo component obtd. from an arom. amine having a soluble group with beta-hydroxynaphthoic acid as a coupling component and forming a lake simultaneously with the coupling or after the coupling, 0.1-30mol% of the coupling component is composed of a compd. of formula. In the formula, X is O or imino; Y is a halogen, an alkoxy, an alkyl, nitro or a substd. amino; n is 0-5. The compd. of the formula can be obtd. by reacting 2-hydroxycarbazole-3-carboxylic acid or 2-hydroxy-3- dibenzofurancarboxylic acid with aniline or an aniline derivative.
