PURPOSE:To provide the title compsn. having excellent whiteness, shelf stability, gloss, etc., consisting of an aq. binder and a specified non-film-forming polymer emulsion. CONSTITUTION:5-70% (by weight; the same applies hereinbelow) alpha,beta- ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid is emulsion-polymerized with 5-95% 1-8C alkyl (meth)acrylate, 0-50% arom. vinyl compd. and 0-50% other copolymerizable monomer at 0-100 deg.C to obtain a copolymer (a). 70-99.9pts.wt. mixture (l) of 0-10% alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid, 0.1-5% monomer having a phosphate group, 50-99.9% arom. vinyl compd. and 1-49.9% other copolymerizable monomer is emulsion-polymerized in the presence of 0.1-30pts. wt. component (a) to obtain a non-film-forming polymer emulsion (B) having a solid content of 20-60%. 100pts.wt. (on a solid basis) aq. binder (A) (e.g., a vinyl resin emulsion) is blended with 0.1-9,900pts.wt. component B and 0-300 pts.wt. pigment (C).
