PURPOSE:To improve the intensity of transmitting light by arranging a polarizer on the basis of the axes of transmission and absorption of the polarizer at specific time so that the axis of transmission of the polarizer is rotated by an angle theta to a direction where the other stable state is brighter. CONSTITUTION:The stable state of one of two cells is made darkest and the axis of transmission is rotated on the basis of the axis of transmission of the polarizer at this time to the direction where the stale state of the other is brighter while the crossed nicols relation is maintained. When the axis of transmission of the polarizer is P1 (or P2), the stable state wherein the polarizer is in the P1 (or P2) direction is darkest and the maximum contrast is obtained, but the intensity of transmitted light is small. When the axis is rotated clockwise from the P1 or counterclockwise from the P2 (by 45 deg.-12 deg.), the maximum transmitted light intensity is obtained and the contrast ratio decreases. Further, when the axis is rotated exceeding said range, the transmitted light intensity decreases and the contrast becomes small. Thus, the axis is rotated by an angle theta<=45-theta' to obtain large transmitting light intensity without increasing the contrast so much.
