PURPOSE:To obtain a vinylbiphenyl polymer which is stable and homogeneous irrespective of changes in environmental conditions and has a high refractive index and excellent transparency, by giving it a structure in which specified substitutents are introduced into the biphenyl ring of the vinylbiphenyl polymer. CONSTITUTION:A polymer of a vinylbiphenyl derivative, having repeating units of the formula (wherein n>=10). In the formula, X is Cl or Br, (a) and (b) are each 0, 1 or 2, (c) is 1-3, (b)+(c)=1-5, Y is -CH3, -OH, -OR, -SR, -SOR or -SO2R (wherein R is a 1-18C aliphatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic hydrocarbon group) and n>=10. For example, a 4-vinyl-4'-alkoxybiphenyl polymer as the simplest of said polymers has a refractive index of 1.65. A polymer derived by introducing chlorine or bromine as X into this biphenyl polymer has a refractive index >=1.70.
